The Hows and Whys Of Mind Control: Conditioning

August 11, 2011

This particular theme has been on my mind fairly prominently today, for reasons I may or may not go into later, so I thought I’d do another one of my posts on different methods of mind control! Today we look at the original, the classic, the mother of them all: Conditioning!

Conditioning is the simple, mechanical process of using a system of rewards and punishments to train a person to perform a particular behavior. It could be argued that we learn just about everything, from cradle to grave, through some sort of conditioning; starting with toilet-training and moving on to school, work, and most importantly for our purposes, fun kinky sex games. 🙂 Usually, the conditioning is reward based, what gets frequently called “pleasure-conditioning” in stories like this; the subject is trained with stimulation of their erogenous zones to associate obedience with arousal and orgasms until they don’t want to disobey. Alternatively, and slightly more brutally, the subject is conditioned with punishment until they are unable to think of refusing their captor’s commands.

Remember when I said that hypnosis was unique in being an achievable form of mind control? Well, I lied. This one’s as common as dirt in real life, showing up so many places that it’s almost unnoticed due to its sheer ubiquitousness. It’s not used much in D/s play; honestly, most of the time the people who get spanked actually crave it. But if you’re reading this, then you’ve been conditioned somewhere along the line.

Some stories of mine that prominently feature conditioning: “Xanadu”, “Under My Thumb”, “Cruel To Be Kind”.

The Hows and Whys of Mind Control: Subliminals

July 6, 2011

As previously mentioned, this is my attempt to break down the different types of mind control that get used in erotic mind control stories, more or less just for the fun of it. Today, we’re looking at “subliminals”.

A subliminal message is one that is encoded with additional information that the conscious mind cannot process, but which the unconscious mind understands. This extra information is not evaluated critically, since the conscious mind isn’t aware of it; instead, it’s simply accepted unthinkingly and becomes a part of the subject’s core understanding. This can take the form of pictures or text that flash past too quickly to read, or speech that is delivered at a pitch or volume that the conscious mind doesn’t hear…pretty much any time someone slips messages past the audience, you’re talking subliminals.

The actual theory behind subliminal messages has been pretty universally discredited, making this one of the more “cinematic” mind control tropes; that said, it’s very popular for a variety of reasons. There’s a lot of overlap between science-fiction fans and mind-control fetishists, mainly due to the common use of all these tropes in sexualized contexts in sci-fi and fantasy, and there’s also a lot of overlap between sci-fi fans and people who make their own videos and audios. So a lot of these people are already interested in the idea of putting together their own videos…and the thought of one that could also get them a sex slave is a major bonus. 🙂 Also, it hits a common button in the MC fetish, the idea of gradual transformation…a lot of the stories focus on someone listening to the song/watching the video again and again, each time becoming just a little bit more like the person their controller wants them to be.

Some stories of mine that prominently feature subliminals: “Girls On Film”, “Dare To Be Stupid”, “Jukebox Hero”, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”.

The Hows and Whys of Mind Control: Magic

June 12, 2011

As previously mentioned, this is my attempt to break down the different types of mind control that get used in erotic mind control stories, more or less just for the fun of it. Today, we’re looking at “magic”.

“Magic” is actually a pretty vague catch-all term for any mind control method that openly and blatantly defies the laws of physics, psychology, and common sense; when a character uses hypnosis that makes someone do something they wouldn’t, it’s hypnosis, but when they use the Ring of Caer Ibormeith to lull them into a deep obedient trance, it’s magic. As you can imagine, this is a pretty blurry category. 🙂

But there are some common tropes. There’s the magic spell or ritual that puts someone into the control of a Master/Mistress; the controller speaks a few magic words, maybe gathers the hair or nail clippings of the victim, and bam! Instant sex slave. There are magic talismans that give the wielder powers of mind control over anyone they choose; lots of “magical harem” stories involve the person getting the talisman and spending the rest of the story picking and choosing the “worthy” victims. Frequently it involves characters being granted one-time chances to alter reality and using it for sex; pretty much every “genie” story could be lumped in under “magic”. And sometimes it’s just a catch-all for the totally unexplained and unexplainable; my own story “Whip It” featured a person obsessed with a sex shop that hadn’t been there last week and vanished as soon as its owner enslaved him. How? Why? It’s magic, baby. That’s all there is to it, sometimes.

Some stories of mine that prominently feature magic: “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “All She Wants To Do Is Dance”, “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On”, “In Your Eyes”, “Eternal Flame”.

The Hows and Whys Of Mind Control: Mind-Control Rays

May 11, 2011

As previously mentioned, this is my attempt to break down the different types of mind control that get used in erotic mind control stories, more or less just for the fun of it. Today, we’re looking at the “mind-control ray”.

That’s not always a literal ray of light, although it very frequently can be; “mind-control ray” is a catch-all term for any technological device that directly alters the thoughts of the victim either to make them susceptible to the control of the user, or to cause a specific behavior that is of benefit to the user. Usually it’s the former; for some reason, there’s a certain appeal to the idea of zapping someone with a ray gun and watching them go all blank-eyed and obedient. 🙂 But this would also apply to brainwashing helmets, control collars, and other various devices that turn women (this seems to be a predominantly yellow control method, for some reason) into mind-controlled sex toys. Or to make them uncontrollably aroused, or to reduce their intelligence, or…it’s actually a very flexible storytelling device.

Of course, it’s a pretty implausible trope, too; although you will sometimes hear about interesting experiments, and conspiracy theories abound, nobody seems to have been able to make a machine that actually alters the way people think. (At least, not directly, he says, glaring at his TV set…) Someday, perhaps, we’ll see it happen, but for now, if you want to brainwash someone, you’ll need to do it the old-fashioned way.

Some stories of mine that prominently feature mind-control rays: “Policy of Truth”, “If I Only Had a Brain”, “High On You”, “Hip To Be Square”, “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades”.

The Hows and Whys of Mind Control: Hypnosis

April 2, 2011

I’ve been thinking a bit lately about the stories I’ve written, and about different ways you can categorize them. Simon, of course, goes by “who’s controlling who”, but other people have talked about “romantic” vs. “sociopathic”, “light” vs. ‘dark”…but one that I’ve been thinking about is the method of control. So I figured I’d do a series of posts talking about the different ways that minds get controlled in erotic mind control stories (not just mine, of course, but I’ll be using mine as examples.) This will be an irregular series, going on until I can’t think of any more. 🙂

The first and most common method, at least in my stories, is hypnosis. Hypnosis involves inducing a state of heightened mental focus, relaxation, and (most importantly for our purposes) increased suggestibility through the use of a hypnotic focus and an induction. Traditionally, the focus is visual and the induction is verbal, but stories have used non-verbal inductions and non-visual foci (“Flesh for Fantasy” has a good example of a non-visual focus.) The goal of hypnosis, in erotic mind control stories, is to increase the suggestibility of the subject, allowing the hypnotist to implant ideas in their mind that they obey (and usually obey without realizing that they are obeying as the result of a suggestion.)

Hypnosis is unique in that it’s the only method of mind control that can actually be used in real life; EMC stories, however, frequently take liberties with what is possible using hypnosis. Some stories, such as “True”, use what I like to think of as “cinematic hypnosis”; others, like “Soft and Wet”, use realistic hypnosis and are based to some extent on true stories. The exact limits of what can really be done with hypnosis remain uncertain, as most hypnosis research doesn’t focus on how it can be used for sex. 🙂

Some stories of mine that prominently feature hypnosis: “True Colors”, “Feels Like the First Time”, “Who Can It Be Now?”, “Don’t Speak”.
